About us
IN THE BEGINNING...
The original idea for College Radio Day was conceived by Rob Quicke (General Manager, WPSC FM, William Paterson University, NYC market), and was founded in December 2010 by Rob Quicke and Peter Kreten (General Manager, WXAV FM, Saint Xavier University, Chicago market). The aim of College Radio Day is to harness the combined listenership of hundreds of thousands of college radio listeners throughout North America and to celebrate the important contribution of college radio to America's airwaves by uniting for this one day.
The aim of College Radio Day is to raise a greater, national awareness of the many college and high school radio stations that operate in North America by encouraging people who would not normally listen to college radio to do so on this day. It is hoped that those people who do tune in like what they hear and become regular listeners. The organizers of College Radio Day believe that college radio is one of the last remaining bastions of creative radio programming, free from the constrictions of having to be commercially viable, and a place where those involved in its programming believe passionately in its mission. College radio is the only free live medium brave enough to play unsigned, local, and independent artists on a regular basis. Indeed, many famous and successful bands today, owe their initial break to being played on colllege radio. Put simply, college radio is an important part of the North American media landscape because of its unique and fearless programming.
The organizers also hope that College Radio Day can also be used a fundraising vehicle for those individual stations that choose to participate, benefitting from the extra attention their station will receive on that particular day. Being a participant in this day is free for all North American college and high school radio stations (AM, FM or online) so that together, for one day, we can lift the national profile of an important form of North American media: college radio.
It's a day of celebration. It's a day of live music and special interviews.
It's the day we all come together.
THE BENEFITS OF YOUR STATION PARTICIPATING
1.The College Radio Day organization will provide professional sweepers/imaging for on-air play and graphics, banners and logos for all radio stations that participate. This will ensure nationwide consistency in the branding of the day.
2.College Radio Day will provide items and prizes for station participants to give away on the day (for example, some autographed and rare/unique items from popular music artists). to assist in boosting listenership and fundraising efforts by individual stations.
3. We will provide stations who participate optional 'news' audio bulletins throughout the day giving information and updates on participating stations, their programming and fundraising efforts as well as and other activities. This provides national exposure for participating college radio stations. and reinforces the feeling of national unity throughout the day.
4.Participating radio stations are encouraged to gather and share, when opportunity allows, specially recorded IDS and liners for College Radio Day use on other participating radio stations throughout the country. For example, "Hi, this is Chris Martin from Coldplay, and you are listening to College Radio Day." If one station lands a great band liner or ID, we all do. It's time to harness our collective resources and connections!

FAQ
F.A.Q.
When is College Radio Day?
The first College Radio Day ever occurred on October 11, 2011, and was a great success! We are already planning next
year's CRD which will occur on Tuesday, October 2, 2012.
How much does it cost to participate?
Nothing. We are all doing this because we believe in the mission of college radio.
Why should my college radio station participate?
First, its completely free for you to be a part of College Radio Day. Second, this is a day that we are, on a international scale, raising the profile of what college radio stations are doing, so you will be a part of something special. Third, we encourage many college radio stations to also use that day as a pledge drive or fundraiser, and we will be working with bands and artists to get you free stuff to give away on the day. Your station will benefit from the publicity and hopefully gain some new listeners too, and maybe raise some money also!
What do we have to do that day with our on-air programming?
All we ask that you simply broadcast that day as usual, but bearing in mind that there will probably be a larger than normal audience that is listening. We hope that many stations will use that day as a showcase for their best content, whether it be special content such as interviews, band performances or other stuff. We will, though, provide professional College Radio Day sweepers and IDs so you will sound as part of the national movement of what we are doing on the day. We will be providing optional College Radio Day News Bulletins throughout the day for you to air if you choose, which will detail all the activities that are occurring across the country.
If I am an HQ station for my state, what does that mean?
Each state will have a designated HQ station (the selection of the station will change each year). This means that your station is the station that all other college stations in your state will report to on the day. We are looking for HQ stations to collect information about what is happening in their state throughout the day and then report it back to the national HQ. The information will be used on the website, social media as well as in the College Radio Day News Bulletins.
Anything else?
Yes. Isn't it about time, what with social media and everything, that college radio stations came together for one day and reminded everyone how important we are? From breaking new artists, producing creative and groundbreaking programming, to being the home of tomorrow's famous broadcasters, college radio plays an important role in the North American media landscape. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it!

Important things we want to share with you
"Think of the most passionate, positive, free-spirited, adventurous, intelligent and friendly person you know. Now turn that up to 11 and you have my friend Angelo Bonadonna.
At age 25, Angelo was taken from us way too soon during a hiking accident in Thailand while there teaching English to young students. We take a small bit of solace knowing he died while doing what he loved, experiencing life to the absolute fullest. I met Ang at the campus radio station of St. Xavier University in Chicago, WXAV. Radio and sports were just a few of the things he knew way too much about. He had a magnetic personality and was always the person everyone wanted to be around. He lived life freely and without hesitation, and he invited everyone to join the ride.
He looked at life as an endless string of experiences waiting to be experienced. If he hadn't seen it, he wanted to see it. If he hadn't been there, he wanted to go. The difference between most of us and him - he went and he saw. Angelo gave everyone a blueprint on how to really live life. To not follow life's predetermined steps, but to focus on your passions, experience new things, and do what truly makes you happy.
I suspect he'd only have one regret in his short, but full life: not seeing the Cubs win a World Series. Unfortunately, many more fans are destined to leave this world with the same regret. Angelo was and is an inspiration to everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was a pep talk personified. If you knew him, you were better for it. When asked to define himself in a word, he chose 'curious'. What an answer." - Nick Jakusz, WXAV alumni & friend.

"We know that Angelo would have loved the idea of College Radio Day - in many ways he was the personification of the spirit of college radio - always brave and adventurous in what he did on the air wanting to connect fully with his listeners. Although you never met him, he was a true asset to the world of college radio and will be missed. This one's for you Angelo!" - Rob Quicke & Peter Kreten, College Radio Day.
